VP-1POPs Mid-WESTPAC 2015 Reunion

Update & Registration Information

Aloha shipmates and friends. Chris and I have been busy getting things in order for POPsí 9th (can U believe it!) Reunion. Building on the great reunions of the past and with the help of those who put them together, we hope to dish out some great Buckeye hospitality, giving everyone great memories to take home.

Our hotel is Hope Hotel & Richard C. Holbrooke Conference Center, (937) 879-2696) on the property of Wright Patterson AFB, but outside the gate; no Military ID needed for check-in will be 1500 hrs, Thursday, Oct. 15. We have a large duty room (DH4/P3 Room) seating 80 (it will be well stocked with drinks and snacks) available at noon. The Hope has a total of 3 handicap rooms. If you need one, register soon!

If you are flying in and want the closest airport, Dayton International is it! It is about twelve miles straight away and perhaps seventeen or eighteen by shuttle or car. Shuttle to or from the hotel is $40 for one or two and $20 each person thereafter.

There are six rooms available the day before (14th) and the day after (18th) at the reunion rates ($99. 00 + tax, includes breakfast buffet). Be sure to tell them youíre with VP-1 P-3 Orion Pioneers to get this rate.

If possible, you will definitely want to arrive prior to Friday AM, as we leave by buses at 0735 hrs for the Restoration Hanger tour. Late arrivals will hopefully still get in in time for our Memorial Service at Memorial Park by the Tan Son Nhut Memorial at 1345 hrs. The park is by the parking lot of the main museum which is the next stop on our itinerary.

As the museum closes at 1700 hrs some may want to return on Saturday to see what they missed Friday. Folks, this museum is HUGE with 17 acres of indoor exhibits. There is also a large book & gift shop. There is no entrance charge for the museum or tours, but the theater (used to be IMAX, now even larger, HD & 3D) does charge a fee. If you only go on Friday, you most likely wonít have time to watch a show unless you would rather do so; up to you!

Evening meals, other than Saturdayís banquet, are on your own as is our custom. Eat in the hotel at Packyís Sports Bar & Grille, have Chinese or pizza delivered, or go out on the town! For more than fast food, be prepared to drive or hitch a ride a couple of miles or more. There will be no real need to leave the hotel for food unless one wants to. A breakfast buffet is provided by the hotel.

After Saturday breakfast, we will have our Annual Meeting in the Duty Room. On your own after the meeting; there is plenty to do and see.

Golf. Green fee $25-Cart Rental $13-Club Rental $20. Dress Code-collared shirt-no jeans. No issue with non-career members playing. Call for tee time reservations 1-2 weeks in advance. They have 45 holes with one course on base, another course off base. It may be easier to play off base so we donít have ID issues. Pro Shop is under renovation. Their # is 937-219-7961. If renovation is still current at reunion time call 937-219-8136 instead.

Many will likely want to go back and do a more complete tour of the Air Force Museum and/or see a flick. Transportation will be on your own. Everyone will get a welcome packet upon arrival with nametags and places to visit including shopping, if thatís your thing!

Thirty miles Northeast of WPAFB in Urbana is a small airfield that houses the small but industrious Champaign Aviation Museum. They are restoring a B-17, the Champaign Lady, from the ground up to flying condition. Several other warbirds are on display as well! Some of us will be car-pooling. Check out their impressive website: http://www.champaignaviationmuseum.org/#

Buses will be used on Friday to transport us to and from the hotel and to the O Club and back for our luncheon. These are to be paid for from the seed money authorized at our last reunionís business meeting. Folks going to the O Club will need to have ID and sign-in on a roster for the bus driver to give the guards at the gate. Military ID is required of at least one person on each bus and each private vehicle passing thru the gate. Every person going to the Restoration Hanger or O Club must have on them a driverís license, military ID or government picture ID.
